Restorative Dentistry

What is Restorative Dentistry?

It’s the treatment of dental structural abnormalities including tooth surface, enamel, and partial tooth structure that doesn’t require full tooth restoration. This treatment helps restore teeth to their proper shape and function, promoting overall oral health. Restorative dentistry treatments include treating tooth decay, abnormal tooth formation in terms of color or shape, and improving or replacing defective old restorative materials.

Causes of Needing Restorative Dentistry

The need for dental treatment can arise from various factors, regardless of age or gender. It primarily stems from eating habits and tooth brushing practices. Those with poor oral hygiene may develop dental problems at an early age. If left untreated, these issues can escalate to the point of requiring tooth extraction or developing gingivitis. These oral health problems can also occur in children who still have their baby teeth.
The most significant damage to our teeth comes from poor oral hygiene, whether it’s not brushing teeth or using incorrect brushing techniques, not getting regular tartar removal, allowing plaque to accumulate between teeth leading to decay, chewing hard foods causing tooth cracks or fractures, and regularly consuming sweet foods and beverages, which easily leads to tooth decay.

What are the Types of Restorative Dentistry?

  • Dental Crowns

In cases of extensive or deep tooth decay where filling alone isn’t sufficient, dental crowns are used. A crown is a material that covers the tooth to help preserve its functionality. Sometimes additional treatments like root canal therapy may be necessary. Crown materials include porcelain, resin composite, metal, and acrylic. The dentist will determine which material is most suitable for each patient.

  • Dental Bridges

This is an artificial tooth replacement that requires natural adjacent teeth to serve as anchors for the restored tooth.

  • Full Dentures

Used to replace cases where patients have lost all or most of their natural teeth, allowing for proper food chewing and maintaining facial balance.

  • Partial Dentures (Removable)

For patients who have lost some permanent teeth but don’t want to sacrifice adjacent tooth structure for bridges, or cannot get dental implants for any reason, removable partial dentures offer an alternative solution to restore confidence in smiling and chewing. The dentist will help recommend suitable materials for the dentures based on usage needs.

  • Dental Implants

Dental implants are currently the best replacement for natural teeth, made from titanium, which has been proven to be highly compatible with the human body. However, not everyone is eligible for dental implants, such as patients with osteoporosis or those with medical conditions like uncontrolled diabetes. It’s best to consult with a dentist to discuss treatment options.

  • Veneers

Veneers are dental restorations for uneven front tooth enamel or to correct abnormal tooth shapes. They are thin pieces that cover the front surface of teeth, made from porcelain or resin composite. They’re increasingly popular in cosmetic dentistry to enhance smile confidence and overall appearance.
